The Leopoldskron Palace (crown of Leopold) is the most beautiful rococo building in Salzburg region. It was built in 1731 by Prince Archbishop Leopold von Firmian as a residence for his family. After 1837 the Family Firmian sold the estate and the building changed owners many times. Even the former King of Bavaria, King Ludwig I can be found under the list of owners.
Max Reinhard (an Austrian Theatre and Film Director) bought it in 1918 and renovated it, because it was in quite bad condition. Because he was an Austria Jew, during WW II he left for the USA, where he died.
In 1947 his widow, Helene Thimig, loaned it to three Harvard students to use it for their seminars.
Since 1958, Leopoldskron Palace has been owned by the Salzburg Global Seminar Foundation. Since 1989 it is mainly used for seminars. The lake around the castle is artificial and in wintertime you can ice-skate on it.
The rear view of the building was used for the Trapp Family Villa in the movie “The Sound of Music”.
