The St. Peter church and monastry were founded by the Frankish missionary Rupert (patron of Salzburg) in the late 7th century. The monastry remains the oldest one on German soil that has been continuously active.
The district of St. Peter is also famous for its cemetery and it houses the oldest restaurant of Europe, the Stiftskeller St. Peter.
The Stiftskeller is also where the Mozart Dinner Concert regularly takes place.
