The Hallstatt region is comprises of a multifaceted natural landscape which includes both historic and cultural dimensions. With its unique network of caves and variety of flora and fauna, the region is considered a complex phenomenon. It is not only a cultural heritage site but also has the distinction of being a natural heritage location as well.
With this international honor, the Hallstatt region finds itself in an exclusive circle among UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Ayers Rock in Australia and the Philippine Islands are the only other UNESCO sites in addition to the Hallstatt Region, in which the aspects of both nature and culture so are uniquely combined.

Cultural Heritage Museum
The new World Heritage Museum in Hallstatt is for the whole family. During an impressive travel through time, the visitors learns about the history of the salt mining of Hallstatt from the beginning of human history to the promotion of Hallstatt region to World Heritage of Humanity.

The Charnel or Bone House (Beinhaus)
The Charnel House dates back to the twelve century and houses over 1200 skulls, of which 610 have been painted in flowery designs. They are neatly stacked in rows along with next of kin and have the date of decease written on them.
