Castle Square (Schlossplatz) was once used to store grain and stable the horses. The paintings on the buildings remind us of bad times of war and should serve as a lesson to future generations. There is also a fountain which was built in 1960 to commemorate the 150 year anniversary of Berchtesgaden belonging to Bavaria.
The Berchtesgaden Palace was originally constructed in the 12th century by the Augustinians. It then became the summer residence of the Wittelsbach family after 1810. Between 1922 and 1933 Crown Prince Ruprecht of Bavaria lived here with his family.
